Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari [Dāmat Barakātuhum]

Shaykh Abdul Raheem hafizahullah is a graduate of Darul Uloom Bury. After graduating, he pursued further study at Mazāhir ul Uloom, Saharanpur (India). He also studied the science of Iftā (Islamic Jurisprudence and delivering verdicts on the rulings of Sharī’ah). Shaykh has spent the last 30 years teaching and lecturing on the various texts which form the Dars Nizami Curriculum. He currently teaches at Darul Uloom Bury. Shaykh travels tirelessly around the country and around the world delivering talks in order to educate and rectify the Muslim community. He has also authored many books, articles and delivered many lectures.

Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari

Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari, a Hanafi jurist, hadith expert and theologian, was born and grew up in Herat, afghanistan where he received his early Islamic education. He travelled to Makkah and settled there until his death in 1014 /1606. His scholarship was exacting and his output profuse having composed works – a great number being encyclopaedic in nature – on just about every field and subfield of the traditional Islamic disciplines.

The Munāfiqūn (hypocrites) were a group of people who did not have the courage to openly oppose the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam feeling that it would be unfavourable in their favour if they wished to find a way of overpowering the Muslims. They felt that they had to wait for the right moment and opportunity to present itself before they made their move, and this is what we witness throughout the course of action they took. Allah describes the Qurʾān as the ‘guidance to mankind, and the Criterion (of right and wrong)’ (2:185). Islamic scholars have therefore sought to explain the sciences associated with correctly understanding the revelation. This discipline has come to be known as ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān, or ‘sciences of the Qurʾān’, and includes many subjects, such as the nature and order of revelation, explanations of the types of expressions used in the revelation and how the sacred text is to be correctly recited. Imam Jalāl ad-Dīn as-Suyūṭī wrote one of the leading comprehensive manuals on ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān entitled al-Itqān fī ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān. The text here translated is a summary by Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Arqahudān of many major topics covered in the Itqā Imam Jalāl ad-Dīn as-Suyūṭī (1425-1505) was a towering ninth-century Egyptian scholar and is considered the reviver of his era. He was a prolific writer and has over 600 titles to his name—many of which are encyclopaedic in nature and cover almost every science of his day. He travelled extensively to gather hadith, including Morocco, Chad, Syria, the Hijaz, Yemen and even India.

Imam Ghazalis Bidayat al-Hidaya is a highly motivational manual detailing the fundamentals of acquiring guidance through God-consciousness (taqwa). Imam Ghazali argues that just as there is an end to this noble objective there is also a beginning to it, which must be made firm for one to achieve success. He then goes on to expound the fundamentals of this ‘beginning.’ While being concise and to-the-point the manual is laid out in the form of a detailed daily timetable providing the reader strong inspiration and much heart-rending counsel. The three sections of this book are on obedience, refraining from disobedience, and the etiquette of companionship with the Creator and with creation. One of Imam Ghazalis final works, it embodies a lifetime of learning, experience, and spirituality and can be taken as an introduction to his larger works.
